I’m pleased to welcome you to The Global FAIR Space, where we will be exploring Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in technology, among other related topics, with a compass firmly set to all things equity.

During the course of my lived experiences, academic and working life, I’ve been across various private industries, the performing arts, local government, international relations, education, futures studies, public health policy, and AI governance. In addition, as a woman of colour who has navigated many different cultural contexts in several different countries, my international exposure has given me a broad perspective on cultural dynamics critical in the tech world where AI impacts are global. I have seen firsthand how technology can either bridge gaps or widen them. It is this understanding of different cultural contexts and how AI can both bridge and create gaps in various societies that I plan to discuss.

AI is more than just technology; it is a mirror that reflects our society, our aspirations, as well as our biases. This space is dedicated to examining how these technologies affect us all. On this blog, I would like to demystify the complexities of AI in a way that is engaging and accessible. Whether you’re a tech expert or a curious novice, my goal is to provide insights that are not only informative but also thought-provoking and empowering. As a champion of the immense power of the human experience and diverse voices and stories, I would like to especially share insights that spotlight the human element in the equation of AI.

We need to govern AI in ways that fundamentally reflect the best of humanity in order to give all of humanity its best chance. – NjS
The common thread runnning through this blog will be the concept of equity. Understanding equity is the first step in harnessing AI systems as a force for good and making sure such systems empower individuals from all walks of life, without exception. I hope to examine the evolution of equity in the digital age and explore how AI can either perpetuate or dismantle the systemic barriers that exist in our society.
I completely understand that there’s a natural apprehension about AI – will it understand us, replace us…outsmart us? Always keep in mind that AI is a tool crafted by humans, for humans and like any other breakthrough – from the printing press to the internet – it is a mixed bag of challenges and opportunities. Also, as with any tool, it is how we develop it and use it that will determine its impact upon our world.

Throughout this blog, we’ll tackle these fears head-on, not by dismissing them, but by confronting them with clarity and honesty. As we have learned throughout human history, fear can dissolve with understanding and dialogue. So, along the way, I’ll be sharing interesting things I find out about in AI development, emerging technologies, as well as global political developments and even entertainment that I find relevant. I hope that you’ll find these topics as engaging and thought-provoking as I do.
So, pull up a chair, join the conversation, and let’s work together to ensure that as AI technology grows, it grows FAIR and just for everyone.
